University of Wisconsin Rugby Club Alumni Matches and Weekend
April 30-May 1, 2010
Wow!! What a great weekend.  We started with a big crowd at the Union Terrace (only slightly dampened by some serious spring rain) with a wide range of years from very recent grads back to the glory days in the sixties.  More joined in at the dinner at the University Club that Bob Freed, founder of the UW collegiate side in 1977 put together.  There were at least 6 or 7 players from the original Wisconsin Rugby team of 1962!

The evening was filled with old friends seeing one another again, sometimes after many, many years.  All the stories were true and lived up to the motto of all old rugby players:  “The older we get, the better we were!”

We had a beautiful, sunny day for rugby and a wind that put most of the rugby on the north end of the pitch.  We had 2 matches this year with the younger alumni taking on the current college side first followed by the older alumni versus the Vomits (Veterans, Old Men, Idiots and Twits), the old boys side from the Wisconsin Rugby Club.

Spectacular plays and feats of daring do were too numerous to count.  The final of the first match ended up 50+ to 40 (roughly) as the old guys took an early lead but the fitness of the younger guys helped get them back into the match.  Given the number of players on the field that have not played in years, the quality of rugby was impressive.  Travis Nonn led the way with 2 tries and Travis Kuhlka, Joel Amidon, Nate, “Big Wheels”, Snapper, Mooney, Nic, Guido, Stimpe, Woody, Pornstar, Superstar, Holland, Gengler, Scraps, Ward, Fox and others showed they still have it!

The 2nd match was won by the Vomits but were led by a number of Wisconsin grads including Rich Beckman,—-
