This past weekend's game summary:

University Wisconsin-Madison vs. University of Wisconsin-Stout

The day started somewhat differently with the coaching staff taking a playoff type approach and getting the players together for a 10.30am team meeting. You know we are in for a good day when at 10.30am there is 95% of the squad chomping at the bit to get the result later in the day, and a result they did.

The game started at a frantic pace, mainly from us with our up tempo mindset really caught Stout unawares and no sooner had we pushed forward we received a penalty which Jordie duly slotted over for us to take a 3-0 lead.

From the restart we pushed up field and were in their ‘red zone’, when a Garrett saw a hole in the Stout and ran through to score close to the post’s that Jordie converted to take us out 10-0.

At that Stout really piled on some pressure yet our defence held firm, trying to run through us wasn’t working so they tried to run the outside channels but our centres Kurtis and Pat and back 3 Garrett,Jordie and Tim, were smashing them as they tried to find that elusive gap to exploit. We held that raid out and pushed back upfield for a break to be made on the fringes and an overload created for Jordie to scoot around and score and then convert to take the score out to 17-0.

At this stage our game plan was starting to really kick in and the players seemed to embrace the running opportunities it was creating.

A tight head scrum taken from Stout close to their line, had the ball spun wide and freshman Pat, seized an opportunity and dummied to outside and took the space that created to take a defender over to score to take the score to 22-0 at halftime.

We knew that Stout would come out firing and to nullify that we had to score first and that’s exactly how it panned out, within ten minutes from the resumpution,a worked move saw Tony crash over for another ‘props’ try. The try was converted and it was 29-0 and the Stout sideline all of a sudden had a dose of quietness, whereby the supporters of the UW,really knew Halloween had come early as that were being ‘treated’ to some great UW rugby.

At this stage Stout did everything they could to get back into the game, that said kicking the ball away when chasing points doesn’t seem the wisest of game management I would of thought and we just simply kept punishing them with some decisive runs.

Two penalties to us took the score out to 35-0, and our theory that we just keep taking the points and building our lead was paying dividends.

We were able to bring 6-7 reserves into the game, which was a fantastic opportunity for those players, but the pleasing aspect was that they made sure the high standards were maintained and made a difference when they came on, which is always great.

A late try to Stout from a poor turnover from us, meant they got something from the game albeit in the 78 minute.

The final score was 35-7 and meant that UW finished on top of their conference after the minor rounds and now play Uni Nth Iowa on Saturday at Cottage Grove at 1pm with the hope of winning and then being in the main Sunday game with the winner going onto the National Championships in the spring.

On another upside our B side won against Stout to make it a great day.

The whole UW Rugby family would like to thank everyone who attended and showed us great support, it is so very much appreciated and we hope you can support us this weekend.

We practice every Monday & Wednesday from 5-7 p.m at the University Bay Fields (behind UW Hospital)
